Highly Selective Breeding
Our aim is to breed versatile, structurally sound beef cattle with outstanding performance characteristics. All our females are selected for their temperament, structural correctness, and great bloodlines. They also happen to be great lookers. To achieve our aim of breeding exceptional Lowlines we carefully select the highest quality bulls to use over our females. Many hours are spent mapping individual pedigrees and desirable traits before choosing a bull for joining. The strategic use of Artificial Insemination (AI) allows us to diversify our bloodlines and use the best bulls available from Australia and Overseas.
Optimal Animal Welfare & Nutrition
The wellbeing of our animals is paramount to us. Our animals are treated with respect and care at all times, they thrive in a natural free range environment. Satisfying our animals’ behavioural needs, gentle handling, pain control for procedures, safe transport and humane slaughter are critical factors in our operation.
We recognise how important good nutrition is to the lifetime productivity of our animals and particularly for our young stock and lactating cows. Nutrition is vital to the health and fertility of cattle
We aim to improve the functional capacity of our landscape and integrate wildlife habitat conservation with our farm management. We are members of local Landcare and Environment groups Our Steel’s Creek property has high environmental values and requires careful management to protect its biodiversity. We employ a biodynamic approach to improving our soil’s fertility. Strategic grazing is undertaken to encourage the recruitment of more productive plants and allow increased ground cover to be maintained. This approach to grazing management reduces the risk of acidification and loss of soil by water and wind erosion. By maintaining greater than 70% of ground cover to mid January we can achieve significantly increased perennial grasses (particularly our native grasses).
